The Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, was signed into law on March 23, 2010 by President Barack Obama, is a health care reform aimed at making health insurance more accessible and affordable for all.
When we say affordable we mean that Obamacare gives health subsidies to individuals and families, based on age, household size and income. The insurance covers numerous treatments and health situations that were not previously covered.
And affordable, because now people with pre-existing conditions and pregnant women cannot be turned down by insurers.
Whether you purchase Obamacare health insurance through a private company or through your employer, you can receive the "10 essential benefits" for health care:
Those who have legal status in the United States and meet certain income requirements qualify for Obama Care.
This initiative allowed, for the first time, more than 40 million people to have health insurance in the United States. This population, until then, had no way to support their health care expenses because they did not qualify for this benefit. They did not meet the requirements of the insurance companies. Obamacare came along to change that picture.
The Affordable Health Care Act expanded Medicaid, covers more low-income adults, and subsidizes private health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
The Health Insurance Marketplace is a platform that concentrates all health plan offerings from private insurers. It provides insurance agents with the facility to consult all health insurance options available to individuals, families and companies.
And accessible, because now people with pre-existing conditions and pregnant women cannot be rejected by insurers.
Some clients come to us and say “Obamacare insurance is no good, I want private insurance“.
Obamacare provides a subsidy to families to help them pay for their health insurance. Insurance is the same for Obamacare as it is for private insurance, the difference is that through the Marketplace, if you qualify, “they give you a credit to pay for part of the cost of that insurance“. While private, you have to pay for it all out of pocket.
However, many times, in order to pay as little as possible, we choose a type of Obama Care plan that covers practically nothing. For more information read here about the categories of health plans in Florida.
